Designed the limited-edition Lunar Basketball release

Challenge

Create a personal, meaningful basketball design that reflected my story and stood out as a collectible release under the Wilson brand. It was an opportunity to put my name on a product that blended identity, inspiration, and craft.

Approach

I looked inward, drawing from my childhood love for space exploration and basketball. The concept fused the two worlds, with nods to NASA’s aesthetic and a focus on storytelling through material, typography, and symbolism. The drop was timed with Lunar New Year to deepen the thematic connection.

Execution

The result was a limited run of 150 basketballs featuring:

  • NASA-inspired logotype

  • Retroreflective material referencing space gear

  • A drop aligned with Lunar New Year

  • Personal branding embedded into the design

The balls quickly sold out, marking a personal and creative milestone that connected story and sport in a tangible way.

I wanted to design a basketball for the kid in me. I have a very vivid memory of an assignment in 1st grade where everyone shared what they did over the weekend with their friends, while I shared all the facts I researched on Mercury—growing up I was obsessed with space. And when I wasn’t daydreaming of space exploration, I was always on the blacktop draining 3’s with the other kids on the block. Everything I dreamed of as a kid has taken me to where I am today and that’s what this basketball revolves around. The basketball is white and has reflective channels as a creative nod to the moon and how it reflects the sunlight, appropriately nicknamed the “lunar ball.” And to package it all up, the ball is releasing in the month of the Lunar New Year, celebrating my AAPI heritage.
